Station post insulators are available in various electrical and mechanical ratings to allow engineers to specify the proper insulator for their installation. When used in high-voltage switch applications, the station post insulators must bear combined mechanical loads that include tension, torsion, cantilever loading and compression. In addition, high impact loads from the switching operation also are imposed on station post insulators.
Standard strength station post insulators are typically used in all standard high-voltage switch and bus applications. They meet or exceed all ANSI standards in both electrical and mechanical characteristics for their voltage class.
High strength station post insulators are used when an extra amount of mechanical strength is required for heavy-duty bus and switch projects. High-strength station post insulators have the same electrical ratings as the standard strength station post insulators. In applications where there are severe short circuits, high-strength station post insulators are often used. They meet or exceed all ANSI standards in both electrical and mechanical characteristics for their voltage class.
Extra-High strength station post insulators are used for projects that involve extremely heavy mechanical loads. They meet or exceed all ANSI standards in both electrical and mechanical characteristics for their voltage class.
Typically station post insulators are installed in the vertical position but they can also be used horizontally. Note that when using them in horizontal applications, the working load strength must be de-rated for 50% of the net weight of the unit. In other words, if you have a station post rated at 2,500 lbs. cantilever, the maximum recommended working load is 1,000 lbs.
Maintenance of station post insulators is really not required as the glaze coating on the exterior of the insulator keeps dirt and pollutants from adhering to the insulator. The metal fittings on the ends of the station post insulators are hot-dipped galvanized steel that will not deteriorate.
The design of station post insulators takes into account both the mechanical and electrical requirements of IEEE, IEC, NEMA and ANSI Standards. Testing is also performed in accordance with the applicable industry standards.
